Introduction

Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) embarked on a project to enhance the monitoring of its VoLTE services across India. This initiative required a robust solution for signalling and user traffic from VoLTE services. The need was to effectively aggregate traffic from multiple optical links and SPAN ports while filtering out duplicate and undesired traffic before feeding the data to the network probe. 

Challenges of monitoring VoLTE services 

  1. Aggregating traffic tapped from multiple optical links and SPAN ports. 
  2. Filtering based on multiple attributes to remove duplicate or undesired traffic. 
  3. Optimizing costs with scalable capacity configurations. 
  4. Addressing cloud-based deployment challenges, such as GRE tunnel termination. 

Technical Solution with Cubro’s Packet Broker and TAP solutions

Vodafone Idea selected Cubro’s packet broker and TAP solutions for their superior performance and advanced features. These solutions were supplied by Cubro’s partner in India – Fastech Telecommunications. A total of 22 EX32+ Network Packet Brokers were deployed in this project to meet the requirements of traffic aggregation and filtering. The probing solution for monitoring the VoLTE traffic was supplied by Anritsu. The decision was driven by the following key advantages: 

  • High Performance: Support for a large number of Access Control Lists (ACLs) to handle diverse filtering needs. 
  • Scalability: Availability of multiple capacity configurations allowed cost optimisation. 
  • Advanced Filtering: Ability to filter traffic based on multiple attributes, ensuring precise data delivery. 
  • GRE Tunnel Termination: Enabled seamless handling of cloud-based deployments. 
  • Ease of Integration: Cubro EX32+ were integrated with SNMP to customer’s Managed EMS, the integration process was completed within a day.

Deployment Experience 
of Cubro’s Packet Brokers and TAPs 

The deployment of Cubro’s packet brokers and TAPs was seamless. Vodafone Idea highlighted: 

  • Zero Technical Challenges: No significant technical issues were faced during the deployment or operation of the equipment. 
  • Full Feature Utilization: All product features were leveraged effectively to meet the project requirements.

  1. Efficient Traffic Management: Enhanced traffic aggregation and filtering improved the quality of data fed to the network probes. 
  2. Operational Simplicity: The simple and swift integration process saved time and resources.
